Ok, there is so much I could say about Tate. I had sooo much fun working ‘with’ her and creating her personality. It’s funny, really, I come up with the basic components and then she ends up growing a life of her own and simply flourishing.
When I was writing Tate’s character arc, I was examining what she represents as a character. Her values. I dearly love this about her—she has a code of ethics, however grey, that she stands by. It was immensely fun to write this for a character who is, in many ways, a predator—she is a vampire. A hunter by nature. And yet…she cares. This juxtaposition was truly fun to explore in her personality, especially human side of the veil. Consistency in character is everything, so ‘feeding’ for Tate—while necessary for her own survival—is grotesque and she chooses to only feed from those she finds deserving. The monsters of the modern world. This was another fun thing to dissect, a ‘monster’ catching and punishing other ‘monsters.' You’ll find, I think, that a ‘monster’ isn’t always what we presume from sheer appearances—humans can be more monstrous in their actions and behavior than a bloodsucking vampire, especially when it’s my girl, Tate.
Another part of her character’s backstory is the loss she’s endured from a young age—never knowing her father and having her mother brutally taken from her left many internal scars. These losses and the quest to finding her true self are a very large part of what motivates Tate. Furthermore, Tate is a person who knows what she wants and, more importantly, who she wants…as well as who she doesn’t. This is particularly fun to write where love interests are concerned and I promise you, this book has a beautiful slow burn, but with SPICE. Yes, it actually burnsssss. You’re welcome ;)
Tate is intelligent and cunning—a true spitfire. All things we love in a FMC, however, I also wanted to play with the trope of the ‘perfect’ female. While Tate is attractive—an average-height, curvy, blonde female—she also has many shortcomings. Physically, this is expressed in her left leg being shorter than her right due to an injury she endured as a child, a past she can’t quite unravel. Additionally, her fighting skills need a lot of improvement and her own magical stores have yet to be fully realized—a certain ignorance, if you will.
I absolutely love that Tate is a multidimensional character with quirks, preferences, strengths, and faults. She quickly gets pulled into the world of nuanced politics and must find her inner courage to find the truth. Tate’s journey is one that is accompanied by several fun tropes: enemies to lovers, lovers to enemies, self-discovery, forced proximity, and the hero’s journey.
I hope you fall in love with this badass FMC, Tate, who is the center of Fangs of Fate, and appreciate her just as much as I do.
I will be revealing more character backgrounds as time goes on and we get closer to the release date of October 29th, 2024. Please sign up for my newsletter to stay up to date on all the most recent news!
