Character Reveal—Chance Dale, A Tortured Soul

Ok, so Chance has a special place in my heart. One of my goals when writing Fangs of Fate was to create morally grey characters in a morally grey world. I loathe want one-dimensional characters—the ones that are purely good while others are purely evil. In my opinion, this is unrealistic. No real person is ALL bright or ALL dark. This is why I love Chance so much; his story is complex, and his heart is well-meaning, even if his actions and choices are questionable—especially where Tate is concerned.

Chance is the president’s son and from the day he was born, he's been indoctrinated with the strictest and purest form of allegiance to his government, the Glenn. His future was always chosen for him. His morals told to him and engrained in him at a young age. All that mattered to Chance’s father during his upbringing was adhering to the Glenn’s code of conduct and laws. Ever since he was a boy, Chance yearned to make his father proud, to be worthy of his father’s attention. And yet…he is and always will be a disappointment. No matter how hard he tries, with his low magical stores, he will never earn his father’s favor.

I love the idea of having a complex character who has his own daddy issues, who seeks approval like so many of us do, and who grew up in a sterile environment without a loving parent. This is one thing he and Tate have in common: a missing parent. While Tate never knew her father, Chance never knew his mom—she passed during childbirth.

Chance’s story and past are messy.

I like to put myself in his shoes: a male whose only self-value is determined by the amount of magic he possesses, something he has no control over. A male who never knew acceptance. A male whose future was chosen for him, serving the Glenn via the guara, and whose only way of attaining the much-desired approval from his father is to earn it.  This is emotionally hard. It can be emotionally stalling. This drives him to be the best of the best. Chance has worked hard in the guara and, from the first time we meet him, he is a Dux at HQ in the Glenn—a powerful position. Perhaps if he’s good enough, he’ll finally secure his much-desired approval from the male who sired him.

His story definitely has its dark parts—its human parts.

However, Chance’s story is not all bad and sad. He may not have innate stores of magic, but he has his looks—yes, he is hottttt, and this (along with his position of power as a high-ranking guaraman) make him popular among the females…all of them. What can I say, he aims to please. ;)

His character goes through a spurt of growth, like so many of us do, and when he meets Joy Holland, he may just rediscover what love is and what he can have…who he can be. But then, in the background, hovering just out-of-sight, is Tate—his first true love. The female he deeply wounded after his actions the year prior, and the one he can’t quite stop thinking about.

Mahogany eyes, tan skin, and slick, tangled limbs on silken sheets…red sheets.

Chance’s journey throughout Fangs of Fate will force him to face his beliefs, the statues he stands by, and the determine the future he wants—a future only he can choose.
